Emerge Weekly Update (April 27, 2011) + Graffiti Bike Tour Recap!

This past weekend, Emerge Miami hosted another installment of the very popular Graffiti Bicycle Tour. The purpose of these rides is to encourage people to get out of their cars and to explore the city’s emerging street art scene in a healthy, green, and community-building way. These rides also promote the work that organizations like Primary Flight have been doing to bring top-notch artists to Miami.

Emergers and Home grown street art curators, Dario and Olga selected five stops on this tour. At each stop, they gave some information about the artist and the pieces.  Sunday’s Graffiti Tour brought out about 100 people to enjoy a leisurely ride around the Wynwood Arts District. It was a great group — lots of new faces. We even had our very first runner participate!

By the way, in case you missed it, check out the Miami New Times Interview with Olga, in which she discusses street art, biking, and the tour. We’ve also got some great photos up of the ride and the art on our Flickr page. Stay tuned for the next installment of the Graffiti Tour. Even if you’ve been on one before, there’s always something new to see.

Here are some of the upcoming events that Emerge is organizing and/or promoting:

TODAY, April 26th - Ride the Divide – 7:30 PM @ Government Center to Ride, 9:00 PM @ O Cinema for film screening – Green Mobility Network will be leading a ride from the Government Center Metrorail station to the 9:00 PM screening of Ride the Divide, a film about the 2700 mile mountain bike race across the Rocky Mountains. Facebook Event Page here.

Friday, April 29th - 305 Critical Mass – 6:30 PM @ Government Center – It’s time once again for the last Friday of the month evening ride. Remember to bring your lights and check out the route at Miami Bike Scene.

Saturday, April 30th – Reggae Ride – 1:30 PM @ Douglas Road Metrorail Station – Join Green Mobility Network and DJ Flagga of WDNA for a reggae-themed bike ride to the FREE Reggae Fest at Peacock Park in the Grove. Bring a bike lock and at least two non-perishable food items to donate to Churley’s House. Facebook Event Page here.

If you’re interested in getting involved or if you’ve got an idea, you are always invited to join us for our meetings at Sweat Records (the best indie record store + coffee shop + vegan cafe in Miami) on Tuesday nights at 7:00 PM.

Happy Earth Day! It’s no coincidence that as we celebrate our planet, this week’s update is full of environmental events. We are really excited about two major events going on this weekend. TONIGHT, our friends at Giving the Green Light will be hosting its first fundraising party at The Stage (more info below). Then on Sunday, do NOT miss another installment of Emerge Miami’s Wynwood Graffiti Bike Tour! Read on for more Emerge goodness coming up in the next week or so…
