Emergaversary Bike Ride- Six Years Whaaat?
Six years ago, in July ’06, the Emerge folks took a gander at bringing together some bike loving Critical Mass in Miami on a Saturday morning, and a beautiful collection of about 100 riders made our imaginations a reality. Costumes, good spirit, and a ridiculous collection of folks chanting slogans such as “We are traffic!” rallied at Vizcaya Metrorail station, and then made their way into Coconut Grove and down to Matheson Hammock and back. That rocked.
So here we are , six years later, and while we’ve worked our way into a variety of transit, environmental, and social experiences and endeavors, we still bring the bikes the second Saturday of every month.
Today, we celebrated our 6th Anniversary Ride with the same degree of absurdity, taking a fantastic group of riders from University Metrorail Station to Tropical Park, where frisbees, watermelon, freeziepops, hummus, and good cheer was plentiful. Add to that the most awesomest cake- a metaphor for the complicated conditions bikers face on our throughways- and, well, it was one amazing way to celebrate.
As the cake encourages everyone to do- “Brave the Streets”.
We did. Continue to do. And we love every minute of it.
Happy 6th Emerge!
