Emerge Weekly Update (June 24th, 2011)

Hands Across the Sand is TOMORROW (Saturday) June 25th!

Join a coalition of citizens and environmental organizations (including Surfrider Foundation, Urban Paradise Guild, Sierra Club, and Greenpeace) for the third Hands Across the Sand gathering against offshore drilling and in support of clean energy. The meeting spot is at 5th Street and Ocean Drive on South Beach at 10:30 AM.

Last June, Miami’s Hands Across the Sand event was the largest in the country! We will be joining hands on the beach at 5th Street to make a public statement about the clean energy future. Organizations will also be tabling and collecting petition signatures to place an anti-offshore drilling amendment on the November 2012 ballot.

For those who wish to bike to the beach, Emerge Miami will lead a ride from the Omni (Arsht Center) Metro-Mover Station. We will meet at 9 AM and ride over the Venetian Causeway to the Beach. Remember to bring plenty of water and sunscreen!

More details about Hands Across the Sand and the petition is on the Facebook event page.

Emerge Weekly Update (June 16, 2011)

In the past week alone, Emerge Miami has been all over the place. Last weekend’s monthly Critical Mass Ride took us through some lovely neighborhoods in Miami Springs. If you were listening to WLRN 91.3 FM  on Monday, you might have also heard the excellent story they broadcast about Miami Bike Polo. Miami Herald journalist Haley White interviewed several Emergers talking about playing bike polo and the growing cycling community. If you missed it, here’s a link to the archived version. And, of course, you are invited to play on Fridays (7 PM) and Sundays (1 PM) at Jose Marti Park.

Here’s are the big events coming up in the next week or so…

THIS SATURDAY, June 18th – Bike Miami Rides – Miami City Hall, 10 AM

Bike Miami Rides have returned for the summer! Improve your riding skills and gain confidence when riding in traffic. This ride will include several skill-building sessions taught by League of American Bicyclist-certified instructors. After the education component, we will ride through Coconut Grove. More details…

Saturday, June 25th – Hands Across the Sand – 5th Street on South Beach, 10:30 AM //Bike Ride from Omni (Adrienne Arsht Center) Metro-Mover Station, 9 AM

Thursday June 30th – A Sketchy Party – Lester’s Cafe, 8 PM

Our friends at Beached Miami are launching their latest project with a party! The Sketchy Miami Portrait Project aims to foster a relationship between citizens and local artists through portraits. Artists promote their work by doing a portrait and citizens can submit photos for an artist to render. You can get a sneak peek of the excellent portraits to come at Sketchy Miami’s new site.

The party will feature live artists, FREE pizza (courtesy of Joey’s), cheap beer, and live music by Sam Friend. This is an event not to be missed! Check out the Facebook event page and follow @SketchyMiami (and @BeachedMiami, of course!) on Twitter.
